When Your Clients/Students say “Not Right Now”

Hi, Reader!

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone who is inquiring about your offer and you get this kinda response....

“It’s just not a good time.”
“Not right now.”
“Maybe later.”

Most people hear that and assume the conversation is over.

But in many cases… it’s actually just the moment where the real conversation begins.

Because “not right now” isn't a no. It’s usually uncertainty, or a timing discomfort, it can often be a fear of change, competing priorities. Or someone trying to stay safe in the familiar.

And how you respond in that moment matters because most people need one of two things from you: 1). permission to move forward or 2). more information!

My simple objection framework

When someone says it’s not the right time, resist the urge to convince, push, or explain more.

Instead, move through three steps:

Validate
Show them you hear and respect where they are.

“Totally fair.”
“That makes sense.”
“I understand why the timing feels tricky.”

This lowers defensiveness immediately.


Reflect
Repeat back what they’re actually saying so they feel fully understood.

“So what I’m hearing is that things feel really full right now, and you’re not sure you have the capacity to take this on.”

Reflection creates clarity-for them and for you.


Future-focus with a question

This is the part most people skip.

You don’t stay in the present hesitation, move them into envisioning life after your offer.
Examples:

“If nothing changes, when do you see this becoming the right time?”

“What would need to happen for this to feel aligned to move forward?”

“Six months from now, what do you want to be different that isn’t different today?”

"If you could get the results you were after, do you think you could make time for it?"

Future-focused questions shift someone out of avoidance and into ownership.

And often… they realize the “timing issue” isn’t actually about time at all.

It’s about readiness to decide.

Sales leadership isn’t about pressure. It’s about helping people see more clearly including seeing the cost of staying where they are and moving them into a decision- YES or NO.
